Just want to give everyone a quick heads up that Nokia has rolled out first firmware update for Nokia N900 and you can get it as Firmware Over the Air (firmware over the air) through the Application manager.
If you haven’t been warned yet, than enable internet connection and refresh app manager and you should see the 18.5 MB large Firmware version 1.2009.44-1. It should be available for most of the generic product codes but owners of branded devices might have to wait a bit longer.
Although there is no detailed change log beside improved Application manager interface as discussed
here ;) The work on application manager is on improving the user experience for installing applications from Ovi store. In addition to that, it's on improving the user experience of installing content from the community and nokia applications catalogues, Ovi store content is not visible in the application manager installable applications. This is intentional, as they want the official Ovi store front-end to be the only place to browse for the great applications, backgrounds, ringtones and wallpapers.
For this reason, the
Red Pill mode was removed as well. (how useful to developers).
It is still highly suggestible to get it as it usually brings dozens of minor bug fixes and improves reliability of your phone.
Nokia N900 support the User Data Preservation but it is anyway highly suggestible to make a proper back up before performing a firmware update just as precaution measure in case something goes wrong.
A word of warning: The next big update will require 45 megs of free space on the rootfs
