Nokia EVP Anssi Vanjoki talks about the Nokia N97

In this video Anssi Vanjoki about the Nokia N97. He notes that it has been a tremendous success for Nokia in terms of how many have been shipped and how much money it has made Nokia, but it has been a disappointment in terms of the experience quality for the consumers. He moves on to describe how Nokia fixed the situation (PR 2.0) and how Symbian^3 will be ensuring it does not happen again.

Firmware update to v20.2.019 Released For The Nokia N97

Do you remember what i told you a few days ago? Ok, that's right, the Nokia N97 has (finally) received a Major Firmware update to version 20.0.019, 20.1.021 and 20.2.019 depending on your region. Its previous version was v12.2.024.

The N97 does have UDP (User Data Preservation), so while its always a good idea to backup all your data before the firmware update, none of your programs or data should be affected with the update.

Remember you can update using the N97’s OTA (Over-The-Air) feature, or if you prefer you can download Nokia’s Software Updater application to update your N97 on your windows PC. Right now the Update seems to be only available via NSU.

If there’s no new firmware detected for your device yet, it might be because it hasnt reached your region product code yet, or maybe your device is carrier branded. It should roll out to all product codes eventually though.

This Update brings a host of new improvements and Major Stability Fixes to the Nokia N97. There’s also Kinetic Scrolling implemented everywhere, including Menus, and new Widgets.

According to the Nokia Discussion Forums, the software contains many fixes and improvements including:

* Improved touch screen scrolling
* Ovi Maps 3.1 with 3–D maps
* Nokia e-mail, Ovi Contacts, Ovi Store
* Improved memory and battery performance
* Improved image and video stability

N97 V2.0 Will Be Distributed By The End Of This Month?

jauhis from Nokia has write the following in response of a Dailymobile.se post (which i didn't published) about an approximate rollout N97 v2.0 firmware schedule :

I am not sure about the origin of the above but what I can say is that the schedule is incorrect.

We are for sure putting the N97 PR2.0 out for public download as soon as possible. PR2.0 will be a major overhaul of the PR1.x baseline. In fact, there is so much new stuff included that we will first introduce PR2.0 via NSU. The schedule for PR2.0 is still not verified, but I'd expect to find the open market versions being distributed by the end of this month (this is not a promise). You will be notified of the new SW availability via myNokia (are you a member yet?) and the in-built SW update application on your N97, which will notifiy you about new firmware releases in NSU and/or FOTA as well as core application updates such as Maps etc.

FOTA updates to PR2.0 will follow in due course.

I know that there is a lot of anticipation for this release and therefore we are putting an extra effort to ensure that your update experience will make it worth the waiting.

In addition to the above, next week we are introducing the latest version of the NSU client so be aware that you will have to update your currently installed version. The main changes in the new client include support for the N900 product as well as some minor improvements.

Nokia N97 v20 Firmware: A Hands-On Experience !

EverythingBlaxx from n97fanatics had the privilege of getting a hands-on with a Nokia N97 running v20.0.005 firmware !

Here's some highlights :

- Nokia added their ‘Connecting People’ slogan underneath their logo when the phone boots up
- The phone starts up with ~45MB of free RAM (RAM stays consistently in the 30-35MB range while you’re actively using it)
- when you press on the name of the profile currently in use (a new option there called ‘Edit active profile’ will pop up)
- Letters to the dialpad on the homescreen added.
- Web browser got a small update from v7.1.13841 -> v7.1.17475
- Add the Artist names to the list view when you’re scrolling through Albums in your Music Library.
- kinetic scrolling EVERYWHERE
